chalk paint chair makeover

This chair was a great deal at a local antique auction.  It cost $40, the fabric and the wood are overall in excellent condition.  I prefer not getting into reupholstering chairs unless its a simple seat cover replacement so I decided to try chalk painting this piece due to its complexity to reupholster.  It turned out perfectly!

Materials used were Annie Sloan chalk paint,  Annie Sloan clear wax, painters tape, sand paper, tooth picks and of course my paint and wax brushes.

First I applied two coats of chalk paint to cover the all the chairs fabric in dark grey.  Once dry I taped off the stripes with green painters tape and applied two coats of the lighter color 'Paloma'.  I also painted the wood work the in this color.  Next I removed the tape and gave the chair a day to fully dry.

After all the painitng was done I lightly distressed some of the wood work using sand paper and tooth picks then applied the clear wax generously and finally buffed the wax it into the chair.

Here is the finished product, very french ticking inspired, don't you think?

Happy DIY'ing,
